Suggestions for Parents of children enrolled in swim lessons:
- We believe the most important aspect of swim instruction is overcoming fear of the water.
- Our instructors strive to develop a trusting relationship with every student. Once a student trusts his/her instructor, the fears of learning to swim can be addressed and overcome.
- We ask that you support our instructors and encourage your swimmer to trust the instructor. Praise any and all attempts your child makes.
- The instructors continually evaluate each student’s skills. At the beginning of a session students may be moved into a more appropriate level of swimming instruction.
- Students will be challenged with new swimming skills; our instructors use a loving but firm method of teaching.
- Instructors are available approximately 10 minutes before and after each class. If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to speak with your child’s instructor during these times. All questions and concerns should be directed to the instructor.
- Students should be out on pool deck five minutes before the start of class.
- Parents are welcome to stay and observe lessons anytime from the viewing area.
- Please inform your child’s instructor of any physical or cognitive disabilities your child may have (e.g. tubes in ears).
- Locker rooms are supervised, however, you can assist your child in the locker room if needed. Children over five must use the appropriate locker rooms. A unisex locker room is available for children over five who need parental assistance.
- Skills are measured using a standardized American Red Cross skills test. Children often repeat a learn-to-swim level.
- Finally, our goal is to help students learn to enjoy the aquatic environment, respect its dangers and gain general knowledge of aquatic safety rules while learning to swim. We hope that our students will discover aquatic recreation and utilize it as a lifelong activity.
