FHN Claims D2 Boys’ Tennis State Champ Team Title; FHC Doubles Also Crowned State Champs

October 24, 2024 Posted In: FHPS District News

According to an MLive article by Hugh Bernreuter, Forest Hills Northern High School, which was ranked sixth in the state entering the state final, surprised the field to claim the Division 2 title for the first time since winning back-to-back state titles in 2019 and 2020.

The Huskies claimed a state title at No. 3 singles when top seed Sebastian Madlangbayan edged Mattawan’s Dylan Hodgman. And No. 2 seed Tanay Shenoy/Matthew Chan earned a runner-up finish at No. 1 doubles, falling to top seed William Knoester/Austin Rowland of Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.

Northern’s big bump came in No. 4 doubles. The unseeded team of Marcus Bernard and Will Hernly reached the state final, piling up points for the Huskies before falling to No. 2 seed Connor Champion and Andrew Wachowicz of Birmingham Seaholm, 7-5, 6-2.
That gave the Huskies enough points to edge Dow and Seaholm, finishing with 26 points for the state title. Dow and Seaholm tied for second with 24 points, followed by Byron Center and Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central with 21 points each.
