FHPS announces new Thornapple Elementary School principal

June 19, 2023 Posted In: FHPS District News

In a letter to Thornapple Elementary School families on June 19, 2023, Superintendent Behm announced the new principal of Thornapple Elementary School, Heather Fix. His letter to families is included below:

June 19, 2023

Dear Thornapple Families,

I am very pleased to announce that Mrs. Heather Fix has accepted our invitation to become the principal of Thornapple Elementary School. Mrs. Fix comes to us with a wealth of experience from within our own school district as both a teacher and assistant principal, as well as elementary and middle school teaching experience prior to her entry to Forest Hills. Mrs. Fix came to Forest Hills in 2015 as an elementary school teacher at Northern Trails. In 2018, she moved to Eastern Middle School to teach seventh and eighth grade science. In 2022, she was chosen as the assistant principal for Northern Hills Middle School.

Mrs. Fix has a passion for elementary education. In the fall of 2022, she had the opportunity to serve as the interim principal at Collins Elementary in our school district. Not only did this temporary assignment confirm her love for elementary-level education, the staff and community at Collins loved her! She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in integrated science education from Grand Valley State University and a graduate degree from Western Michigan University. She has a track record of building strong teams of educators who focus on providing all students with what they need to grow, learn, and thrive.

We are thrilled to welcome Mrs. Fix to Thornapple. When not leading schools and helping kids and families, Mrs. Fix and her husband Mike are learning with their own three children. Thank you to all of the parents and staff members who participated in the search and selection process. You can expect to hear more from Mrs. Fix over the next few months. To learn more about Mrs. Fix, School News Network wrote a story on her this past school year.

We are grateful to David Lyon for his dedicated and student-centered leadership as principal of Thornapple Elementary. We wish him all of the best in his retirement and unhurried time with his kids and grandchildren!

Please join me in congratulating and welcoming Mrs. Heather Fix. Finally, please join us as we thank Mr. David Lyon for a career of service to young people, Thornapple, and Forest Hills.

Sincerely,

Dan Behm
Superintendent
