MANDARIN CHINESE IMMERSION
GROWING GLOBAL MINDS
Forest Hills offers Mandarin Chinese immersion, equipping students with one of the world’s most in-demand languages while delivering powerful cognitive benefits along the way. Mastering Mandarin’s tonal sounds and character-based writing system builds memory, attention, and problem-solving skills that carry over into other academic areas. Unlike the district’s early-total Spanish immersion model, Mandarin immersion at Meadow Brook Elementary uses a 50/50 one-way approach, with students spending half their day learning in Mandarin and the other half in English, starting in kindergarten. This balanced structure builds strong bilingual foundations while keeping pace with English literacy from day one. The program is open to all FHPS resident families, and depending on enrollment numbers and available openings, may also be open to Schools of Choice families. Proficiency in Mandarin Chinese opens doors in business, diplomacy, and international careers. By high school, that early investment can pay off in real college credit toward a Chinese language minor, made possible through FHPS’ exclusive partnership with Western Michigan University, a true Forest Hills distinction.
THE MANDARIN CHINESE IMMERSION EXPERIENCE
From kindergarten through senior year, FHPS’s Mandarin immersion program builds fluency in language and culture alike. Students learn to read, write, and speak Chinese, while also practicing traditional calligraphy and celebrating cultural traditions like Moon Festival, Lunar New Year, and the Kite Festival. Transportation may be available to in-district residents through regional bus stops, making this enriching journey accessible from day one.
As students advance, the program offers experiences few districts can match, from parent advisory group-organized trips to Beijing and Shanghai, to college-level Chinese courses taught by Western Michigan University faculty right on the campus of Northern High School, building toward a Chinese language minor without ever leaving Forest Hills.
From a kindergartner’s first character to a high schooler’s first college credit, it’s one connected journey, building fluency, confidence, and a global perspective every step of the way.
