SPANISH IMMERSION
BUILDING BILINGUAL LEADERS
Forest Hills Public Schools’ K–12 Spanish Immersion Program offers students a unique opportunity to become bilingual, biliterate, and culturally proficient through an engaging educational experience that begins in Kindergarten and continues through graduation at Forest Hills Northern High School. Available to any in-district student regardless of attendance area, the program follows the Forest Hills Northern path and provides instruction in Spanish while maintaining the same rigorous academic standards as traditional classrooms. Students develop advanced language skills by learning core subjects through Spanish, preparing them to communicate confidently in one of the world’s most widely spoken languages. As they progress through the program, students have opportunities to participate in Advanced Placement coursework, travel experiences, internships, and earn the Michigan Seal of Biliteracy. Many graduates continue their language journey beyond FHPS, pursuing Spanish majors, minors, study abroad experiences, and careers that value bilingualism in an increasingly connected global economy.
A COMPREHENSIVE K–12 SPANISH IMMERSION EXPERIENCE
As Michigan’s largest and longest-running K–12 Spanish Immersion program, Forest Hills Public Schools has been a leader in bilingual education for more than three decades. Since our pioneering class became the first to complete 13 years of Spanish Immersion and graduate in 2012, the program has continued to grow and thrive, serving more than 1,000 students today. From Kindergarten through high school graduation, students develop advanced proficiency in Spanish while building the academic, cultural, and communication skills needed to succeed in a global society.
Our program begins with an Early Total One-Way Spanish Immersion model in grades K–6, where students learn and grow through Spanish as the primary language of instruction. As students transition to middle and high school, they continue their bilingual journey through a Secondary Continuing Dual Language Immersion model, with coursework taught in Spanish that strengthens and expands their speaking, listening, reading, and writing abilities. This intentional K–12 pathway ensures students graduate with exceptional language proficiency and real-world skills that set them apart.
To make participation accessible for families throughout the district, transportation is provided for all Spanish Immersion students in grades K–12 through conveniently located regional bus stops.
