FHPS students represented the district well at the GVSU FIRST Robotics event. Top teams in the state gathered on March 20 and 21, for this fiercely competitive tournament. The COMETS advanced to the quarter-finals, where they suffered a heartbreakingly close loss.
The COMETS won the prestigious Industrial Design Award, which is given to the robot that distinguishes itself from others by its aesthetic and functional design. To win this award, the team had to be able to describe how their robot is elegant, efficient, and practical. The entire machine design must be worthy of this recognition, not just a single component.
The final highlight of the day came in the form of a giant check awarded to COMETS alum Simon Zwart, who will be attending GVSU next year. Simon won the GVSU $20,000 scholarship that is awarded to an outstanding high school senior who participated on a FIRST Robotics team.
