Ada Elementary School welcomed teachers from Lowell Public Schools to experience the Reading Workshop model in third- and fourth-grades. The Reading Workshop model includes components such as a mini-lesson and independent reading where conferring and small group work take place. This is the second school year FHPS teachers in grades kindergarten through fifth are using the Units of Study for Teaching Reading developed by Columbia University Teachers College under the direction of author and educator Lucy Calkins. It has proven tools and methods for teaching reading and research to support the methods of instruction. Some of the techniques used to teach reading include greater access to a variety of books, interactive read alouds, shared reading, anchor charts, turn and talks with a partner, and take-home reading books, among other strategies.
