For the last few years, Forest Hills Public Schools has been among the numerous public schools within Michigan to start school before Labor Day. School districts bypass a law passed in 2005 that mandates the first day of school not be held until after Labor Day by applying for waivers from the Michigan Department of Education to begin prior to Labor Day.
In addition to individual public schools having the ability to submit a waiver to start school prior to Labor Day, intermediate school districts may also submit a waiver on behalf of the schools within an ISD. Kent ISD is making an application to the MDE for a renewal of the pre-Labor Day waiver for the 2020-2021 school year and beyond and is looking for input. If KISD’s waiver is approved, the 20 school districts within Kent ISD, which includes Forest Hills Public Schools, will also be eligible to begin the school year before Labor Day. As part of Kent ISD’s deliberations, they want to get feedback from parents and community members regarding opinions about starting school before Labor Day. Please let our ISD know your thoughts and take a moment to complete a short online survey: http://bit.ly/KentISDlaborday The survey is currently live and will be kept active until Monday, Sept. 23.
Should you have any questions about the waiver process or are unable to complete the online survey, please call KISD, 616-364-1333.
