Five students from Forest Hills Eastern High School were among the top 13 winners in this year’s 41st Annual Economics Club of Grand Rapids’ Essay Contest. The students had to write on the topic: “How Might a Renewed Emphasis on Career and Technical Education in High School Impact West Michigan?” FHE juniors, Kennedy Southland and Claire Verbrugge, were awarded first and second place honors. The first place student received $2,000, a $500 gift card and a YMCA teen membership. The second place student received $1,000, along with the $500 gift card and YMCA teen membership. Other FHE students were awarded $250 for their top essays. The students are in the Advanced Placement language arts class taught by Lynn Cvengros, and interestingly enough, the students wrote their essays at home during the polar vortex and state of emergency snow days.
The following is an excerpt from Claire Verbrugge’s essay.
