Hundreds of veterans were honored this week when students from many FHPS buildings paid tribute to the men and women who have served this great country and held Veterans Day celebrations and ceremonies. Pine Ridge Elementary School held its 12th Annual Veterans Day Luncheon. About 65 veterans attended the event. Students wrote cards and thank you notes, created posters and decorations, and much more. Forest Hills Northern High School held its 15th Annual Veterans Day Ceremony. Forest Hills Central High School honored veterans during a ceremony which included bagpipers, a color guard, military music, speakers, and much more. Eastern High School’s marching band marched in the Veterans Day Parade in downtown Grand Rapids. Central Woodlands 5/6 students honored veterans with a ceremony that featured songs song by students and staff, and a digital presentation created by students featuring the special veterans in their lives. Northern Trails 5/6 School honored veterans during a special program and luncheon, and many more schools honored veterans in their own special way.
November is National Veterans and Military Families Month. Americans have remembered those who served our country in uniform on Nov. 11 – first as Armistice Day, and then, since 1954 as Veterans Day. In this 100th year of commemoration, the Department of Veterans Affairs continues that tradition of observance to include both veterans and military families for the entire month of November.
