Students at Meadow Brook Elementary School, home of the district’s Mandarin Chinese immersion program, recently finished projects they created during Confucius week. Students in all classes participated in projects which reflected the Chinese culture. Kindergartners created the borders for the large ink drawing of Confucius by practicing the principle of patterns using gold paint, often used in Chinese art. First-graders did Chinese paper cutting in culture class. Second-graders learned how to use Chinese calligraphy ink and brushes to create East Asian Sumi-e paintings in art, and then constructed kites. Third-graders created an impressive collaborative painting using Chinese calligraphy ink and brushes. They used the element of value to create an achromatic portrait of Confucius. Fourth-graders wrote Confucius sayings and teachings in calligraphy and then created a display in the main hallway.
