Fourth-grade students at Ada Vista Elementary School used design thinking to help create their own version of magical creatures. According to an article on School News Network, Ada Vista art teacher Jenn Gregory built on a week the students spent in the Grand Rapids Public Museum’s Immerse program, where they learned that magical creatures often develop from natural mysteries. Gregory presented a mystery that she encountered while walking her dog at her family’s Traverse City-area apple orchard. It was something she experienced that she couldn’t explain. So, she let her students use their imaginations to begin to create artistic solutions that would help explain the mystery. Read about what the students created and how they incorporated communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and empathy while creating their art projects. Read the complete story and see pictures of students’ design thinking processes online with School News Network, www.schoolnewsnetwork.org. Read whether or not their imaginations solved the mystery.
