RESOURCE ROOM AND TEACHER CONSULTANT SERVICES
Resource room and teacher consultant services enhance rather than replace the regular education curriculum. The resource program is not divided by disabilities and accommodates all students. Students are expected to meet the Michigan Merit Curriculum expectations in order to receive a diploma.
ACADEMIC STRATEGIES – N900 CHS, EHS, NHS 9, 10, 11, 12 1 Credit
This course is designed to assist students with academic performance. Topics include: learning style, test taking strategies, memory techniques, time management, organization, outlining, etc.
ALTERNATE CURRICULUM
The major determining factor for placement in these classes is based on the degree the disability affects the students’ ability to succeed in regular education settings. Typically all students are mainstreamed wherever they can be successful. If students need more support they may be placed in classes, which replace many regular education classes. It is possible for a student to take all of his/her classes in a special education setting, but he/she may not be eligible for a diploma.
READING STRATEGIES – B900 CHS, EHS, NHS 9, 10, 11, 12 1 Credit
This class will work on developing functional literacy skills. This course offers instruction the areas of word recognition, reading comprehension, written expression, spelling, and vocabulary development.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS – B910 CHS, EHS, NHS 9, 10, 11, 12 1 Credit
This course emphasizes English Language Arts skills as they relate to real life: reading, writing, reference skills, oral communication, etc.
SCIENCE – D900 CHS, EHS, NHS 9, 10, 11, 12 1 Credit
This course will cover basic elements of earth science and life science to provide an understanding of the interdependence of all living things and their environment.
SOCIAL STUDIES – C900 CHS, EHS, NHS 9, 10, 11, 12 1 Credit
This course will cover basic knowledge in the areas of government and citizenship, as well as the interconnectedness of today’s world through understanding parts of the world and our relationship with them.
MATH STRATEGIES – E900 CHS, EHS, NHS 9, 10, 11, 12 1 Credit
This course will cover functional math skills involving basic computation, measurement, money management, and consumer awareness.
ADAPTIVE ART – L900 CHS, EHS, NHS 9, 10, 11, 12 1 Credit
This yearlong course will explore art in a hands-on approach, focusing on basic concepts, terminology, and art history.Students are encouraged to learn a variety of art media using many different techniques. This course may be repeated.
ADAPTIVE PE – M900 CHS, EHS, NHS 9, 10, 11, 12 1 Credit
Students will engage in physical activities that develop motor skills through the use of adaptive equipment and modifiedgames and exercise programs.
LIFE SKILLS – N910 CHS, EHS, NHS 9, 10, 11, 12 1 Credit
This course is designed to help students make a successful transition from high school to adult life. Topics include:transition, IEPs, career exploration, vocational skills, independence, etc.
WORK BASED LEARNING I – N910 CHS, EHS, NHS 9, 10, 11, 12 1 Credit

KENT TRANSITION CENTER (KTC) – V330 CHS, EHS, NHS 11, 12 3.0 Credits
Kent Transition Center (KTC) offers adaptive vocational and career services for special education students. Thefollowing career clusters are available: Agriscience, Building Maintenance, Construction, Hospitality, Manufacturing,Nurse Aide, Retail, and Transportation.
