Welcome to the Language Arts Program at Central Middle School!
LANGUAGE ARTS 7
In the seventh grade, students are exposed to a variety of selections in literature (mystery, poetry, drama, mythology, and
legends) as well as outside readings. Students develop reading and writing strategies, whole building vocabulary,
spelling, speaking, and listening skills. Understanding thematic units and thesis support writings are a focus at this grade
level.
CHALLENGE LANGUAGE ARTS 7
Challenge Language Arts 7 follows the grade level content expectations for seventh grade, but uses curriculum from the
Center for Gifted Education—College of William and Mary. The pace is much faster, and involves more in-depth,
advanced and challenging readings, projects, tests, language study, writings, and discussions.
CHALLENGE SPANISH LANGUAGE ARTS 7
Challenge Spanish Language Arts 7 follows the grade level content expectations for seventh grade, but uses curriculum
from the Center for Gifted Education—College of William and Mary. The pace is much faster, and involves more in-depth,
advanced and challenging readings, projects, tests, language study, writings, and discussions.
Must be enrolled in the Spanish Immersion Program.
LANGUAGE ARTS 8
In the eighth grade, a continued development of composition skills occurs with emphasis on writing from selected topics.
Grammar, writing, and reading comprehension are strongly emphasized. Extended learning in poetry, short stories, and
dramatic techniques through selected topics in literature are three major units of study.

HONORS MATH 8 (HIGH SCHOOL ALGEBRA I)
REQUIRED COURSE SELECTION INFORMATION:
The guidelines listed below are for seventh and eighth grade students to follow in their course selection for the school year.
• Seventh and Eighth grade students are required to take a full year of math, science, language arts, social studies (These
courses will be automatically scheduled).
• Seventh and Eighth grade students are required to take three nine-week sections of physical education (These courses will
be automatically scheduled).
• Middle school students are required to take one nine-week course of Computer Technology and Literacy in
seventh or eighth grade. Students who already possess exceptional computer skills may choose to take a
competency test to opt out of this required course. Students who attain 75% or higher on the competency test will
be permitted to elect an additional exploratory course.
